The Rank System of Narnia

The members of Narnia are given rank to reflect accomplishments they have made as members of Dagorhir. The rank system is a simple reward system, nothing more. People of higher ranks are not allowed to order people around like the military. In most cases the highest-ranking person on the field will take command of the unit because they have the real world experience to do so. Regardless of actual rank this person is known as the “field commander”. To increase in rank, members must meet certain requirements such as providing personal weapons and improving their costuming. Some of the requirements are tough, but that is what it takes to create a good looking, effective unit. New members are assigned the rank of Levy when they join the unit. It is impossible for new members to start as soldiers, squires, knight-errant, or knights regardless of previous experience. All promotions require the approval of the High Commander and are based on the opinion of the Knighthood.

Rank Requirements

Each level of rank has certain requirements that the member must meet to achieve and hold that level of rank. The goal of the rank requirement system is to produce members that are well versed in the ways of Dagorhir and Narnia. The more experience a member has, the more respect they command on the battlefield. The requirements of each rank are as follows:

Levy:

A levy is the lowest ranking in Narnia. They are not expected to start with good costume [also known as garb] or even come with weapons. To qualify as a Levy the person must follow the steps described in “Joining Narnia”. The Levy is required to wear a solid blue color tunic, tabard, or similar garb at battles. The Levy is allowed to borrow the tabard. Veteran members of Narnia will assist Levy’s with obtaining costumes. A member must spend 6 months as a Levy before they are permitted to advance to the rank of soldier. A Levy is permitted to accomplish the Challenges of Narnia in preparation of their Knighthood, but doing so is not a requirement of rank at this level.

Soldier:

Soldiers are the rank-and-file of Narnia. To qualify as a soldier the person must meet Novice level costume requirements as described in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms. The soldier must provide their own garb. They are not allowed to borrow garb, they must own it. This can be the same garb they wore as a Levy. The Soldier may wear the red lion of Narnia on their garb, but it is not required at this point. In addition the Soldier must provide one personal weapon. The person cannot borrow this weapon they must own it. It is not required that they made the weapon as long as it meets Narnia standards. A shield counts as a weapon for this requirement. A Soldier is permitted to accomplish the Challenges of Narnia in preparation of their Knighthood, but doing so is not a requirement of rank at this level. The High Commander is permitted to promote a Levy to the rank of Soldier at any local or national battle event after seeking the opinions of the Council of Knights. A member must spend six months as a soldier before they are permitted to advance to the rank of Squire.

Squire:

To advance to the rank of Squire a Knight must nominate the member for the promotion. The squire must meet veteran level costume requirements as described in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms. The squire must provide their own garb. They are not allowed to borrow the tunic/tabard, they must own it. This can be the same tunic they wore as a soldier. The Squire must provide two personal weapons. The person cannot borrow these weapons they must own them. It is not required that they made the weapons as long as they meet Narnia standards. One of the two weapons can be the same weapon the member provided as a soldier [as long as it is in good working order]. A shield counts as a weapon for this requirement. A Squire is expected to be capable of providing and maintaining their own weapons with little or no assistance from the unit. Squires are expected to actively participate in chapter practices and battles, and assume minor leadership roles in running and organizing the unit [under supervision of the Knighthood]. A Squire is required to start accomplishing the Challenges of Narnia in preparation of their Knighthood. A Knight is permitted to accept a Squire as a member of their personal household, but this is not a requirement for this rank or advancement to future ranks. The Knight is permitted to place additional requirements on their squires, but the Squire’s participation is always voluntary. The only punishment for failing to meet their Knights requirements is removal from the Knights household. The High Commander is permitted to promote a Solider to the rank of Squire at any local or national battle event. A member must spend a year as a soldier before they are permitted to advance to the rank of Knight Errant.

Knight-errant:

A member must spend a minimum of one year as a squire before seeking promotion to Knight Errant. The member must have a good start on the challenges (2-3 done already), and must have the nomination of a Knight. A Knight-errant wears a gold arm sash [provided by the unit] to show they have moved up in rank. This symbol of rank is worn on the left shoulder A Knight-errant is not required to improve costuming or provide more weapons for this rank, but it is expected that a member of this rank possess enough equipment and garb to keep them in a constant state of readiness. This includes a selection of fighting garb and feasting garb. A Knight-errant is expected to actively participate in chapter practices and battles, and assume leadership roles in running and organizing the unit [under the limited supervision of the Knighthood]. The High Commander is permitted to promote a Squire to the rank of Knight Errant at any local or national battle event, but national or large local events are preferred to smaller battles. A Knight Errant is not permitted to take squires at this rank. A member must spend a year as a Knight Errant before they are permitted to advance to the rank of Knight.

Knights:

Knights are the highest rank in Narnia. When a member reaches the rank of Knight they have proven that they are both well equipped and well educated in the ways of Narnia and Dagorhir. The goal of Knighthood is to produce members that command respect when they speak and present themselves on and off the battlefield. To reach the rank of Knight a member must complete seven tasks listed later in this manual of arms, and be nominated by a majority of the Knighthood. When ready the High Commander will arrange to award the member Knighthood and inform the member when and where this will occur. Knights only occur at Ragnarok and Father Christmas. Knights wear a silver and gold arm sash [provided by the unit] to show they have moved up in rank. This symbol of rank is worn on the left shoulder. A Knight is permitted to accept a Squire as a member of their personal household, but this is not a requirement for this rank or advancement to future ranks. A Knight is not required to improve costuming or provide more weapons for this rank, but it is expected that a member of this rank possess enough equipment and garb to keep them in a constant state of readiness. This includes a selection of fighting garb and feasting garb. A Knight is expected to actively participate in chapter practices and battles, and assume leadership roles in running and organizing the unit with little or no supervision. A Knight is permitted to develop personally heraldry to show distinction between their household and the common Narnian Heraldry, but the rampant lion of Narnia is a required element of this Heraldry. The High Commander and the Council of Knights will assist with the creation of, and must approve all Knightly heraldry.
